Conservation - Trout Unlimited
The Gila/Rio Grande Chapter of Trout Unlimited emerged from the Mesilla Valley Fly Fishers in 2010 and has members from across southern New Mexico and the border region who are dedicated to healthy watersheds and native trout. Our home waters include the nation's first designated Wilderness in the Gila National Forest in southwest NM where Gila trout are native, and in the southeast the Lincoln NF where Smokey the Bear was rescued and Pecos-strain Rio Grande Cutthroat trout originally swam. The GRG-TU Chapter works on stream habitat restoration projects that repair damage caused by wildfires and flooding, and we support efforts to restore populations of native trout in their historic range. We collaborate with federal and state agencies, other angling and outdoor recreation and conservation groups. We provide education and outreach to local youth and college students, organize Trout in the Classroom curricula for K-12 schools, and we advocate inclusive participation and representation of our rich cultural heritage and diverse populations in recreational angling and conservation projects.
